PET-CT Scan

Advanced imaging technique combining PET and CT scans for comprehensive cancer detection and evaluation

PET-CT Scan

A PET-CT scan combines two powerful imaging technologies—Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT)—to provide detailed information about both the structure and function of cells and tissues in the body, making it an exceptionally valuable tool for cancer detection and monitoring.

What is a PET-CT Scan?

PET-CT is an advanced nuclear medicine imaging technique that combines:

  • PET (Positron Emission Tomography): Shows metabolic activity in the body by detecting how tissues absorb a radioactive sugar solution
  • CT (Computed Tomography): Provides detailed cross-sectional images of the body’s internal structures

When these two technologies are combined in one scan, doctors can precisely locate abnormal metabolic activity within the body’s anatomy, making it particularly effective for detecting and monitoring cancer.

How is the Procedure Performed?

During a PET-CT scan:

  1. You’ll receive an injection of a radioactive tracer (usually FDG, a form of glucose) that cancer cells absorb more readily than normal cells
  2. You’ll rest quietly for about an hour while the tracer circulates throughout your body
  3. You’ll lie on a table that moves through the PET-CT scanner, which resembles a large donut
  4. The scanner detects signals from the tracer and creates 3D images of your body
  5. The entire procedure typically takes 2-3 hours, including preparation and scanning time

Clinical Applications of PET-CT

PET-CT is primarily used for:

  • Cancer Detection: Finding cancerous tumors that may not appear on other imaging tests
  • Staging Cancer: Determining if and how far cancer has spread
  • Treatment Planning: Guiding decisions about surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy
  • Treatment Monitoring: Evaluating the effectiveness of cancer treatments
  • Detecting Recurrence: Finding cancer that has returned after treatment
  • Cardiac and Neurological Applications: Evaluating certain heart and brain conditions

Benefits of PET-CT Scanning

  • Comprehensive: Provides both functional and anatomical information in a single exam
  • Accurate: Superior detection of small tumors and distant metastases
  • Efficient: Reduces the need for multiple diagnostic procedures
  • Whole-body Imaging: Can scan the entire body in one session
  • Personalized Treatment: Helps tailor cancer treatments to individual patients

Preparation for Your PET-CT Scan

  • Fast for 4-6 hours before your appointment
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours before the scan
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes without metal components
  • Inform your doctor about any medications you’re taking and any medical conditions
  • Let your doctor know if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have diabetes
