Welcome to Your Healing Journey: Comprehensive Thyroid Cancer Care Abroad

Thyroid cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting the endocrine system. It occurs when abnormal cells begin to grow uncontrollably in the thyroid gland, located in the neck. While thyroid cancer is often treatable with early detection, access to advanced treatment options and expertise can make all the difference. Health tourism offers patients the opportunity to access world-class care in internationally renowned hospitals, combining the latest medical technology with the expertise of specialized surgeons and oncologists.

This brochure provides information about thyroid cancer, the benefits of robotic surgery, and the importance of follow-up care with oncological treatment.

What Is Thyroid Cancer?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. It produces hormones that regulate metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. Thyroid cancer develops when cells within the thyroid grow abnormally and form a tumor. This cancer can occur in different types, including:

  • Papillary Thyroid Cancer: The most common type, often diagnosed in early stages.

  • Follicular Thyroid Cancer: Often diagnosed in middle-aged adults, less common than papillary.

  • Medullary Thyroid Cancer: A rare form that arises from the C-cells of the thyroid.

  • Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer: A very aggressive form of cancer that tends to spread quickly.

Signs and Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer

  • A noticeable lump or swelling in the neck

  • Changes in voice, including hoarseness

  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing

  • Pain in the neck or throat

If you experience any of these symptoms, early consultation with an oncologist or general surgeon is essential for diagnosis and timely intervention.

Treatment Options for Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer treatment usually involves a combination of surgery, radiation, and/or hormone therapy. The treatment plan will depend on the type and stage of the cancer, as well as the patient’s overall health.

  1. Surgery:

    • Thyroidectomy: The removal of part or all of the thyroid gland. This is often the first treatment choice for thyroid cancer.

    • Lymph Node Removal: In some cases, lymph nodes in the neck may be removed if the cancer has spread.

  2. Radioactive Iodine Therapy:

    • After surgery, radioactive iodine is often used to destroy any remaining cancer cells or tissues that may not have been removed during surgery.
  3. Hormone Therapy:

    • Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is often given after thyroid removal to regulate the body’s metabolism.
  4. External Beam Radiation Therapy:

    • In cases of more aggressive thyroid cancer, radiation therapy may be used to target cancer cells that remain after surgery.

Step-by-step Treatment Journey

• Patients who travel to our country for treatment are admitted to the hospital on the day of the scheduled surgery.

• Comprehensive information regarding both pre-operative and post-operative planning is provided directly by the attending physician and clinical nursing staff.

• Intraoperative nerve monitoring is utilized during surgery to protect the recurrent nerve which is necessary for voice production

• Pathology results are typically available within one week. Patients are informed of any additional treatment options that may be required.

• The hospital stay typically lasts 1 day. Following discharge, patients stay an additional 3 days at a hotel arranged by our health tourism agency. After a follow-up consultation, patients with no complications are cleared to return to their home countries by air.

Oncological Follow-Up Care: Ensuring Long-Term Health

After thyroid cancer surgery, ongoing follow-up care is essential to monitor for any recurrence of the disease and to ensure optimal recovery. Regular follow-up appointments with endocrinologists and nuclear medicine specialists will include physical exams, blood tests, and imaging to assess the thyroid hormone levels and check for any signs of cancer returning.

Follow-up Care Includes:

  • Thyroid Hormone Monitoring: Regular blood tests to check thyroid function and adjust hormone therapy.

  • Ultrasounds: Monitoring the neck area for any signs of recurrent cancer.

  • Radioactive Iodine Scans: To detect any remaining thyroid cells or recurrence.

  • Supportive Care: Psychological and nutritional support may be offered to help manage the emotional and physical effects of the disease and treatment.
